Engaging learners through video

An ideal way to engage learners is through video. As an example of the popularity of video you only need look as far as the website YouTube, which currently has 15 hours of footage uploaded to it by users every minute. Digital technology whether it is mobile, video or computer games has fundamentally reshaped the way most of us connect with, make sense of and engage with society.

We need to understand that most of the younger generation will expect an entirely new type of relationship with the world around them that does not rely on accessing information but on creating new knowledge, resources and products. While core basic skills remain vital, new developments and the increasingly collaborative nature of learning will challenge our existing educational infrastructure.

e-Learning guru Lord Puttman stated that "only by engaging with these new and at times intimidating challenges for the process of teaching and learning - almost all of which are facilitated by digital technology - will we produce a generation of creative learners with a breadth and a depth of understanding capable of dealing with this new incredibly difficult century”. As part of his call for a rethink of traditional educational models Puttnam has made a film entitled  We Are The People. A New Year…A New Year of Security Awareness

I have been reviewing how we can make security awareness training more exciting and more relevant for the learner this year. What new tools can we add to the toolbox that will inspire the learner to actually change their behaviors when it comes to being aware of security risks.

With the plethora of social media, video and other communication tools out there, I figure there has to be some way to tie all of these mediums together to produce a truly awesome ongoing weekly awareness campaign. You can tweet about it, put together a video on youtube that you can put on the internal website or use some free video animation tools to flash images that resonate to the learner's everyday work tasks. This past year, Terranova spent a lot of time on the development of new online content with a different pedagogical format focusing more on risks/consequences/threats and best practices than prior versions. We also spent time creating new videos that can be used to promote awareness on various topics. However, I think we really need to look at what can be done with all of these other wonderful tools out there.  What are you planning to do this year to freshen up your training? We would love to hear about your ideas!

Why continue with the mundane?

Human beings are learning machines: our survival has long depended on our ability to take lessons from experience and change our behaviour as a result. Why, then, is so much training today focused not on experience but rather on overly dense PowerPoint slides and lecture-style presentations?

If everyone agrees that learning needs to be interactive and hands-on...why do we then insist on continuing with the same boring classroom style lecture lessons? Why have our methods continued to lean toward the dull and mundane?

Learning new concepts needs to be interactive. Hands-on, just-in-time training is critical to developing not only knowledge but also skills—ensuring that learning is sustained.
